Ultra Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a unique opportunity for people with no martial arts background to experience the wonderful world of MMA, in a safe and enjoyable environment.
Hydrosave’s Matt Taylor took up this challenge in memory of his nan who sadly passed away from cancer. Matt was also keen to undertake something for charity to support those in need. He selected Macmillan as friends of his have used their service. The Ultra MMA challenge is not for professionals, it is for novices who want to get fit and try a new and challenging experience.
On signing up Matt received 8 weeks of free intense training from a trainer in his local area. Through his training, Matt got to a high level of physical fitness and learnt the techniques he would need for his fight. Matt found the training challenging, but worthwhile. Matt ’s ultimate goal would be stepping into a cage to face his opponent on April 8th. To make it even more difficult, his opponent was his best friend of 20 years, so Matt had to really focus to get into the right mindset.
The fight went well, and even though he lost (by a close margin), Matt did himself proud. He lost a stone in weight through training twice a week. In addition, he had extra 1-2-1 sessions with the coach every other weekend along with training in the gym. Matt also overhauled his diet by cutting out all sugar and focussing on a balanced intake of food.
